What are some of the techniques that you use to become a better listener?

One of the practical ways of becoming a better listener, is to note down points while someone communicates to you. This helps in the following ways:
a) concentrate on what is being said.
b) recap and later on reply, if asked to the points that has been communicated.
c) Inquire back with the points captured to clarify whether understanding is correct or not.
